I can not think of a more worthy candidate who exemplifies the spirit of David Lamb than Heather. I have know her for more than 25 years and will briefly speak on her contributions:

Manual Therapy contributions in Canada

Heather has been an integral part of the Orthopedic division (OD) manual therapy courses as an instructor, examiners, curriculum lead and chair of the education committee since 1998.

London Ortho Unit Instructor – 1998 to present.

AIM Ortho Division examiner – 2009 to present

Curriculum Chair of the OD Education committee – 2009-2015

Chair of the OD Education Committee from 2015 to present.

Heather’s contributions to Manual Therapy within the Orthopedic Division have been extensive and she has provided an immeasurable number of volunteer hours to our association in the management, promotion, and curriculum renewal of manual therapy along with the re-design of the new Advanced Integrated Musculoskeletal (AIM) education system.

In addition, since 2007, Heather’s contributions in helping teach, evaluate, and develop curriculum within Western University’s Comprehensive Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (CMP) program has been innovative and impactful and personally I could not think about running this program without her guidance and teaching.

Hilary Reese states in her nomination letter: “I had the pleasure of first meeting Heather while working on the Education Committee in the role of Examination Chair…Heather transitioned from the role of Curriculum Chair to the Chair of the Education Committee. Heather is a true leader….. she has always been supportive and encouraging of other’s initiatives, all while taking on a leadership roles to increase MSK expertise by questioning and challenging her own and other’s beliefs within our profession.

Education and Research

Heather’s greatest contributions have been in leading, supporting, restructuring, and updating the orthopedic education for both the OD and Western University programs. Dr. Alison Rushton (director of SPT at Western University) wrote in her letter that Heather has contributed to all levels of manual therapy and orthopedic instruction but in particular her exceptional experience at Western during the extremely challenging circumstances of the pandemic. She has demonstrated excellence in performance in curriculum renewal, teaching and learning, educational leadership and innovation in assessment for musculoskeletal physiotherapy, supported by her engagement with expert clinical practice outside of the University. Her performance in teaching is evidenced by outstanding peer and student evaluation. Heather’s sustained excellence in education is reflected in her numerous awards at Western University:

Western University Marilyn Robinson Teaching Excellence Award, 2023

Faculty of Health Science Teaching Award of Excellence, 2022

School of Physical Therapy Teaching Award, 2020

Angela Armitt Part-time Award Western University Teaching Award 2016

Heather contributes both to knowledge generation through research and knowledge translation to students, peers, and clinicians more broadly to enable widespread implementation of knowledge into clinical practice. Even though she has only been a full-time faculty member at Western for 5 years she has contributed to four peer reviewed published papers.

Mentorship

The number of students Heather has mentored within the OD and Western orthopedic manual therapy system is legendary and it is best summed up by Greg Alcock, and Jen Van Bussel

Greg states “I have had the opportunity to learn about curriculum development and educational pedagogy through the mentorship of Heather Gillis. She has mentored myself, and many of the peers I work with, on learning and refining the foundational principles of the orthopaedic level system in Canada. She has been instrumental many times in mentoring myself, and other A.I.M instructors.”
.
Jen Van Bussel states: Heather has mentored me in the fine art of compromise, negotiation, and working towards a common goal. Heather’s contribution to the development and instruction of the AIM program is nothing short of extraordinary.
On a personal note, I have had the good fortune of knowing Heather for the last 28 years. We studied for our manual therapy exams together (formerly the A and B), co-instructed all level of AIM courses since 2003, examined together with the AIM and Western program. Her generous academic spirit and passion for our profession brought us together but her confidence, loyalty and kindness are what have made us longstanding friends.
Finally, I know Heather is most likely cringing since she is not the type of person who seeks awards or likes to be openly praised in public so, I think it is fitting that the last words should come from her husband Darcy (who by the way she met in physiotherapy school):
Darcy sent me this note:
Heather, I am beyond proud and ecstatic that you are being honoured tonight with the Golden Hands award. You are so deserving of this honour. I am only sorry that I was not able to attend, but as you know helping our daughters move out of their university apartments is a huge task. You have been my friend, partner and love of my life for the last 29 years and myself, Olivia and Lochland send you big hugs and love from our moving vans in Guelph and Toronto.

Congratulation Heather Gillis!!!!!-->

Francois Landry

Elaine Maheu and Francois Landry

["post-17137","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
