New ODCU – Femoral Acetabular Impingement Syndrome (FAIS)

Femoral Acetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is a motion-related hip disorder characterized by a combination of patient-reported symptoms, clinical signs, and specific bony morphologies identified through imaging. Despite growing research, challenges remain in accurately diagnosing FAIS and determining the most appropriate treatment pathway, particularly when comparing physiotherapy-led rehabilitation with surgical intervention. Although both approaches can improve pain and hip-related function, uncertainty persists regarding the magnitude and long-term clinical significance of the benefits associated with surgery. Given these considerations, establishing individualized, evidence-based management pathways is increasingly important. The aim of this issue is to review the clinical presentation and assessment of FAIS, summarize current rehabilitation recommendations, compare conservative and surgical interventions, and highlight validated outcome measures that can support clinical decision-making.
