Course description

The focus of this course is to help understand how to classify patients with lumbar / thoracic pain into different categories to guide treatment- stop using the same exercises for every patient with back pain. Physiotherapists will be able to understand and use the Goal Oriented Classification System for guiding treatment.
This 2-day in-person course is part of a four course series to allow Physiotherapists to develop confidence in the foundations of Orthopaedic assessment and treatment of Lumbar-Sacral pain using the Goal Oriented Classification approach.
The learning goals of this course include:
1) The Goal Oriented Classification- Introduction to how to classify patients with Lumbar-Sacral pain into categories which identify the goal needed to help with their symptoms and the interventions used to accomplish this goal
2) Clinical Reasoning: how to organize your assessment so that you can effectively screen patients with Lumbar-Sacral pain for safety and also figure out what category the patient fits
3) Outcome measures: What EBP tools will help you measure initial function and assess for risk for patients with Lumbar-Sacral
4) Patient Assessment (Story): How to identify key features in the patient story that help you categorize patients with Lumbar-Sacral pain.
5) Physical Exam of the Lumbar-Sacral Region: Use EBP assessment tools, Specific tests to rule in and Sensitive tests to rule out pathology to help you appropriately categorize a patients with Lumbar-Sacral pain
6) Manual Therapy: What is the purpose of manual therapy and how does it help patients with Lumbar-Sacral pain.
7) Interventions for the Hip to help Lumbar-Sacral Pain: Learn interventions for the hip supported by research that help you make with-in session changes to your patient’s Lumbar-Sacral pain
8) Interventions for the Lumbar-Sacral Region: Learn interventions for the Lumbar-Sacral area supported by research that help you make with-in session changes to your patients pain
The 2-day in-person learning program will be an intensive session learning the psycho-motor skills necessary to effectively assess and treat patients with Lumbar-Sacral pain. You will learn the valid and reliable assessment techniques to help you effectively screen patients for serious pathology and pain that is referred to the Lumbar-Sacral area. You will learn the techniques to effectively rule in and rule out problems in the Lumbar-Sacral region so that you can effectively classify your patient in the Goal Orient Category that leads to the most effective evidenced-based treatment.

You then will learn how to apply the most the most effective evidenced-based treatment techniques for the Goal Orient Category that patients can fit into: Pain
Control, Mobility, Static Leg Pain, Dynamic Leg Pain, Motor Control and Functional Rehabilitation. Learn a systematic approach to assessing and treating people with lumbar sacral pain that allows you to confidently create an individualized treatment plan so that you can work to the top of scope and help your patients Monday morning!
