The TMJ eh?…what a challenge in the dental and physical therapy world. I remember, as a new grad, that I wished never to get a “TMJ patient” because I felt so inadequate in my knowledge of the condition. My anatomical knowledge was strong but I felt I lacked in the biomechanics and clinical interpretation of a dysfunctional joint. I must say that my undergraduate training in TMJ dysfunction and pathology was significantly lacking. The TMJ was somewhat “glossed” over. Remember the adage, “knowledge is power”? Well, that is the mantra that is dear to my heart when it comes to the TMJ. I went back to the books, took a few courses from Dr Mariano Rocabado PT, and challenged myself with a few patients that were referred to me via a few dentists.
