Course description
This university-affiliated, safety-first dry needling program goes beyond techniques to teach whole-body neuromusculoskeletal reasoning.
➡️ Whole-Body Gunn Model & Clinical Reasoning
Gunn IMS teaches clinicians to treat persistent pain as neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction, not just a local tissue problem.
• A cohesive whole-body framework that consolidates and expands on everything previously learned at tertiary level and beyond
• Emphasis on root-cause reasoning instead of point-chasing or “just adding a tool”
➡️ Safety & Standards You Can Trust
Safety isn’t a module; it’s the standard—backed by university affiliation and decades of collective expertise.
• Best-in-class safety protocols embedded at every level
• UBC oversight and Dr. Gunn’s legacy set Gunn IMS apart from other courses
➡️ Accessible Pathway & Ongoing Community
Gunn IMS meets today’s reality without lowering the bar.
• Accessible credentialling, with advanced certification for true mastery
• Ongoing education and practitioner community that keep standards—and practice—evolving over time
The UBC Gunn IMS training program structure is:
I. Level 1 – Foundations: teaches the Gunn IMS model and less technically challenging dry needling points.
II. Level 2 – Advanced: teaches more advanced neuropathic assessment, clinical reasoning and more difficult dry needling points. Level 2 requires completion of Level 1.
III. Level 3 – Certification: Certification in UBC Gunn IMS awarded by the UBC Faculty of Medicine (CGIMS) – requires completion of a case study and will include high proficiency dry needling points. Level 3 requires completion of Levels 1 and 2.
Levels 1 and 2 meet provincial physiotherapy college dry needling credentialling requirements, so physiotherapists who only need legal authorization to dry needle can complete Levels 1 and 2. Level 3 is the last step in the full Gunn IMS certification pathway; successful completion results in certification awarded by the UBC Faculty of Medicine (CGIMS).
Each level includes both online and in-person components. Please allow at least six weeks prior to each in-person component to complete the related online material.
